Law of Attraction and the Economy

money, abundance, law of attractionEconomy has been a buzz word for some time now in around the globe.  There is no doubt that the current state of the economy has and continues to impact the lives of many American families.  Talk of the poor economic climate can be heard everywhere. It’s the focal point of discussion on the news, television commercials, friends and right down to the water cooler at work.  Of course people are talking because we mainly converse about the things that have the most impact on us.  And let’s face it, if we haven’t personally been hit by the economic crunch, then we know of at least one person who has.

So how do we maintain our spiritual balance and attitude of gratefulness when we are suffering financially?  My answer is, we cannot afford not to.  In fact, it is more imperative in times of great crisis that we become more embedded in our spiritual thoughts and beliefs. The basic principle of the Law of Attraction is, like attracts like.  We get more of what we think about and we become what we think about.

I was inspired to write about this topic today because of a dialogue I shared with a colleague this morning.  This is someone that I know on a very casual basis and have never discussed anything personal with.  My colleague was in such despair that she had to talk to some one about the issues she had been facing for the last few months.  It was with great pain that she shared her story with me.  Her husband has been out of work (sales) for months now and the loss of his income has impacted their family not only financially, but also emotionally.  With tears welling up in her eyes and in a state of tremendous despair, she shared with me the struggles that she had been facing.  For the first time in her 25 – year marriage, she was the breadwinner, which has left her husband feeling inadequate.  Obviously this has put a strain on her marriage.  As I sat there and listened to her story, my heart was torn.   I wanted her to know that I understood her.  When people are in despair, they are looking for practical things that they can do to make things better.  After she was done speaking, the first thing I did was give her a big hug.  Then I offered her some words of encouragement.  This is what I shared.

1.    Perspective – You have to try and gain some perspective on your current situation.  In the big scheme of things, how bad are things really?  Sure, they are not ideal, but they could be severely worse.  After the devastating earthquake in the city of L’Aquila in Italy, hundreds of people were left with nothing.  But the power of the human spirit is strong and resilient.  As a society we are so attached to our “things” that we lose sight of who we really are.  When we are left with nothing, we are forced to return to our inner selves to reconnect with what is important.  Palma of Buddha Trance Blog wrote a wonderful article, Detachment on the Fast Lane, that really drives home this point. When all is said and done, all that is really important are those intangibles that we cannot purchase.  Our hearts and our love will never be lost if we nurture it.  My colleague still has a good paying salary and a wonderful family.  When I shared this perspective with her, I could feel a sense of lightening of the burden she’s been carrying around.  I encouraged her to try and focus more on the positive aspects of her life.

2.   Gratitude – I asked her to think about the things in her life that were going well.  I also gave her an assignment.  I told her to sit down and write a list of everything in her life that she was grateful for.  Things like her kids, her home, her job, her marriage, etc.  Whatever she could come up with.  If she is going to shift her consciousness and perspective, this is going to be imperative.  We get more of what we think about, so if we continually think despair and we are depressed, we cannot create anything but more of the same.  She seemed to really like this idea and decided she would implement it as soon as she went back to her desk.

3.    Detaching – When we are so deeply entrenched in our own stories, we get buried so deeply that we cannot see the light of day.  We begin to eat, sleep and drink our story.  We accept it as fact and become powerless to change it.  We surrender to the negative feelings.  The worse it becomes, the worse it becomes.  The first step in detaching (allowing) is acceptance.  We must first accept what is.  The question you have to ask yourself is, what can I change right now?  You can’t worry about the things you can’t change.  So let it go and accept it.  Once you are in that place, then you can safely allow yourself to start feeling better.  And once you start to feel better, you will see more positive results in your life.

4.    Love – Due to the strain that their financial hardships had put on their marriage, I suggested to her that she should take time out to nurture her relationship with her husband.  Do something together that will reinforce their love for each other and also let her husband know that she does not blame him.  A simple walk in the park or a quiet homemade dinner where they could just re-connect and strengthen their bond with each other.  Love is a powerful emotion that has strong healing abilities.  Love can heal wounds and provide a sense of security.

All of the above recommendations that I made were for the sole purpose of realigning the energy of my colleague and her spouse.  I never mentioned anything about the Law of Attraction to her.  It does not matter at all if she is aware because the principles work all of the time whether we believe they do or not.  Like I mentioned earlier, I saw a shift in her energy as we sat and talked.  It is impossible to create positive circumstances when our emotional energy fields are low.  However, when we are engulfed in our problems, we become so engaged in that “reality” that it is hard to pull ourselves out of it.

I wanted to share this story with my readers because I want everyone to know that there is always an alternative.  Ultimately we are in control of our destiny.  It is ok to be informed of what is going on in our world, but too much exposure can have a negative impact on us.  I don’t dispute that we are not in the most favorable economic times.  However, that does not have to be a reality for you.  I recently made a post, Raising Our Consciousness, where I discussed how our individual thoughts had a significant impact on the collective consciousness.  If each of us as individuals chose to think effortless abundance vice poverty thinking, then we are in fact impacting the consciousness of the world as a whole.  It is my belief that abundance is possible in any economic climate.  We live in an abundant Universe and abundance is always flowing.  The question is, are you a vibrational match for it?  Choose to unplug from the Matrix we are in.  Don’t put too much stock in the ideology of lack and a terrible economy.  The negative economic chatter has become a collective mantra in the United States. Each and every time we participate in this dialogue we are affirming this for ourselves.   Affirmations are seeds that we plant and that will later give us a result.  What do you want your results to be?

Lisa, you are a born teacher and have a natural gift to inspire people. These points are explained in such a clear way, and the way you guided your colleague was full of love and compassion. You were gently guiding her to vibrational alignment, speaking words that she could understand and relate to. This is what great teachers do!

Thank you so much for the reference to my post, I am honored.

I confess, this is a source of great frustration for me, trying to explain to others that the more we focus on the negative – the more negative things become. I wrote a post about this (http://deniseleeporter.net/2008/11/25/are-americans-thinking-their-way-into-a-recession/) and received a tongue lashing from someone who felt I was being flippant. I always say that I experienced the recession before everyone else did, and I certainly didn’t make my way out of it by crying, complaining, or blaming others for where I was.
Anyway, great post, I love your blog.

Hi Denise, yes it is a hard concept for people to grasp. When we are in the throws of whatever it is we are going through that is *all* we can think about. We don’t realize that the more we focus and think about what is, we are affirming and giving it more power. I will stop by and take a look at your post. Thanks for commenting. :)

Can I make a comment, without sounding harsh? I’m finding your choice of font style really hard to read – I hope it’s ok to say that. I use Firefox, so not sure how it looks in other browsers.
